United States factories expanded for a tenth straight month in October while Canada's manufacturing sector contracted, and that gap is now the competition. ISM reported via PR Newswire on Nov. 2, 2026 that the US Manufacturing PMI rose to 55.5 percent in October, with the Production Index at 59.0 percent, its highest since November 2021.
The pressure underneath is cost. The Prices Index stayed elevated at 75.2 percent, which means US plants are producing more while paying more, and still expanding. A Canadian plant cannot answer that by wishing for a weaker currency or a relocation fund.
You do not have to move the plant to beat the gap. You have to see the plant clearly.
Margin defence at home is operational. Waste, downtime and yield loss are the costs a plant already controls, and they are measurable with data the operation already produces. Plants that act on that picture through operational intelligence and plant systems find recoverable margin in changeovers, micro-stops and scrap that monthly averages hide. That is the honest counter to a stronger US cycle: not cheaper inputs, but less loss between the inputs you buy and the product you ship.
Canadian plant leaders should take the October numbers personally. Pick the line with the worst hidden losses, measure a month of stops, waste and yield against plan, and fund the fix from what the measurement finds.
